Flooring is one of the biggest finishing decisions in a Pakistani home — it covers every room, it is expensive to replace, and it shapes how the house looks and feels for decades. The choice usually comes down to marble or porcelain tiles, with granite, terrazzo and wood-look options in the mix.

There is no single right answer. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose for each part of the house.

Marble

Marble is a natural stone with depth and character no manufactured product fully matches. Pakistan has a long tradition of marble use, with many local varieties available alongside imported Italian, Spanish and Turkish stone.

Strengths

  • Natural beauty and variation — each slab is unique
  • Cool underfoot, welcome in Karachi's heat
  • Can be repolished to restore its finish after years of wear
  • A sense of permanence and value

Weaknesses

  • Porous and soft compared with porcelain — it can stain and scratch
  • Etches with acids such as lemon juice, vinegar and some cleaning products, leaving dull marks
  • Stains from turmeric, oil and tea if spills are not wiped quickly — a real consideration in Pakistani kitchens and dining areas
  • Needs sealing and periodic polishing

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles are fired at high temperatures, which makes them dense, hard and highly resistant to water and stains. Modern porcelain can convincingly imitate marble, stone, concrete and wood.

Strengths

  • Low maintenance — resistant to stains, acids and scratches
  • Consistent quality and colour, easier to plan and match
  • Large formats with minimal joints for a seamless look
  • Wide range of looks and price points

Weaknesses

  • Quality varies widely — cheaper tiles can be uneven, which shows in large formats and makes laying difficult
  • Cannot be repolished — a chipped or scratched tile must be replaced
  • Grout lines need sealing and cleaning
  • Lacks the depth of real stone, though the best products come close

Typical 2026 price ranges

Prices vary with quality, origin and size, and with the exchange rate for imports. As a rough guide from published Karachi figures:

  • Local marble varieties can start from around Rs 120–180 per sq ft for the material
  • Imported Italian and Spanish marble can cost Rs 900–2,000+ per sq ft
  • Porcelain tiles span a wide range, from economical local products to premium imported large-format tiles

Installed costs add laying, adhesive or mortar, grouting, levelling and, for marble, grinding and polishing. Reported supply-and-fix figures for Karachi range from roughly Rs 180–280 per sq ft for standard ceramic tiles to Rs 800–1,500 per sq ft for luxury marble. See our interior design cost guide.

Room by room

  • Living and drawing rooms: either works well. Marble suits a classic, formal feel; large-format porcelain suits contemporary interiors.
  • Kitchens: porcelain is the practical choice — it resists stains from turmeric, oil and acidic foods. For counters, granite or quartz are more durable than marble.
  • Bathrooms: non-slip porcelain is safest. If you love marble, use a honed (not polished) finish and seal it well. Our bathroom design guide covers waterproofing beneath any floor.
  • Stairs: marble or granite treads with anti-slip grooves or strips.
  • Outdoor areas and terraces: non-slip, outdoor-rated tiles or stone that does not get too hot in the sun.

Karachi-specific considerations

  • Humidity does not harm marble or porcelain, but poor installation over damp floors can trap moisture and loosen tiles. Fix any rising damp before flooring — see our seepage guide.
  • Dust is constant, so lighter polished floors show it more; mid-tones and honed finishes are more forgiving.
  • Heat: stone and tiles stay cool, which is why they remain the default in Pakistani homes.

Installation matters as much as the material

A beautiful material laid badly will disappoint: uneven surfaces, hollow-sounding tiles, wide or uneven joints and lippage between tiles. Insist on a level base, the right adhesive, proper spacing and protection after laying.
